Excerpts taken from the Oxford Annotated Bible:

Genesis "Then the Lord God said, 'It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner."(2.18) "And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, "This one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken."(2.22-2.23) "(In the garden of Eden) the serpent said to the woman, 'You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of (the tree of knowledge) your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."(3.4-3.5) "So when the woman saw that… the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were open…"(3.6-3.7)

Excerpts taken from: THE JOURNEY OF MAN: A GENETIC ODYSSEY (2002) Spencer Wells The author was the head of the Population Genetics Research Group at Oxford University.

"Eve's uniqueness… represents the root of the mitochondrial family tree, and as such she unites everyone around the world in a shared maternal history(p41). We are all the recent descendants of a single woman who lived in Africa less than 150,000 years ago… (which) begs the question of where Eve actually lived…the picture that has emerged is that the oldest genetic lineages are found in people living in eastern and southern Africa… these populations have maintained a direct mitochondrial link back to Eve(p40).
